PHONE calls have cast doubt over the alibis of Madeleine McCann suspect Robert Murat and Russian computer expert Sergey Malinka.

Records show that the two men had a series of talks - including one at 11.40pm - soon after four-year-old Madeleine went missing from her apartment in Praia da Luz 16 days ago.

Murat, 33, has claimed that at the time he was asleep in his mother Jenny's nearby home.

Malinka, 22 - who also lives nearby - said in a newspaper interview he had not spoken to Murat for a year.

He claims he only knows him because he helped him with a laptop at 71-year-old Jenny's house.

Both men have refused to discuss the phone calls. Murat is the only suspect in the case. Malinka is being treated as a witness. They deny any involvement.

Detectives are said to be concerned that though Murat and Malinka claim to be only business acquaintances they were captured on CCTV speaking animatedly in the days after Madeleine vanished.

Murat also rented a hire car for three days after the abduction, possibly after he realised he was under police surveillance.

He told the hire firm it was because searchers wanted to use his car.

But yesterday his friend Tuck Price said Murat's own car had clutch problems.

Mr Price said Murat was "in a state of shock". He added: "Robert doesn't understand many of the things that have been printed about him.

"But he's very strong and mentally healthy. He doesn't need any kind of psychological help."

As fears grew that Madeleine had been smuggled out of Portugal, it emerged that police have still not checked CCTV cameras along the A22 motorway leading to Spain.

By last night the support website www.findmadeleine.com set up by the McCann family had received more than 65 MILLION hits just 48 hours after its launch.

The astonishing wave of support was backed by 22,000 messages.

CAN I SEE MUMMY SOON?
Tourist says she saw Madeleine in Morocco..pleading with a man.
Vanessa Allen In Portugal 19/05/2007

A TOURIST is convinced she saw Madeleine McCann in Morocco - begging a man: "Can I see mummy soon?"

Marie Olli, 45, says the little blonde girl was in pyjamas and standing with a scruffy man in his 30s at a petrol station ten days ago.

She said yesterday: "I am sure it was Madeleine. She was a sweet girl with a very cute face. She was standing alone with a man about a metre from her. She looked sad and a little lost." Marie, left, said the girl turned to the man and said: "Can I see mummy soon?" She added: "When he saw me looking he turned away so I couldn't see his face."

Marie said he appeared to be British but did not seem to be the girl's dad. She added: "It seemed strange to see a small girl there. I'd have been holding her hand - but this man stood away from her."

It seems any of these "excuses" for Murat renting a car can be easily checked out. He must've changed his first story when nobody could be found who used his car in the search. Has his car been in the shop for "clutch" problems? Also, has his laptop been seized, as his Russian friend seemed to have "cleaned" his, in the nick of time.

The Portuguese police are most certainly at fault for allowing ANYBODY into that apt. after Madeleine was taken. It was a crime scene!!! It should have been sealed, even to the parents, now they can't even tell if they find Murat's DNA in there if he is the abductor (or anyone else for that matter) as he was walking in and out freely the next day!!

IMO they should arrest these two and beat it out of them!!!! Kidding about the second part, but there is so much suspicious activity surrounding these two and they both refused lie-detector tests. The witness who first reported seeing a child appearing to be Madeleine said she was with 2 men and a woman....maybe the woman made a clean escape with her.

AuntieM- These guys look especially suspicious and seem to have attracted the Police attention on their own.

Whether they have the next Richard Jewel here or not only time will tell.

It looks like the did not volunteer any of the info and were later confronted with it. That makes the Police get tunnel vision and 'could' allow the real suspect to allude capture.

Again, only time will tell, but these two look very guilty on the surface.

Here on the site we have the video of Sergei Malinka in his own words. I'm sure you have seen it, but he comes across as honest. Not like another liar we are currently following. He might have seen the writing on the wall and it was only a matter of time until the police got to him after Murat and decided to wipe out his HD. That makes him suspicious, but not guilty.

Remember Paulus or Joran purposefully infected their computer with a virus. That makes him suspicious, but not guilty. I believe Paulus did it. But we don't know for sure yet.

If you need direction to the Sergei Malinka video please ask.
